My niece led the way into the darkness, holding my wife’s hand as we entered Carlsbad Caverns on Saturday morning. Down down we went, exploring the vast cave opening, surrounded by echoes, feeling the moist air, and smelling bat guano. The trail was somewhat lit, but the mystery and magic of this underground universe was still intact. We marveled at the stalactites and stalagmites. We also beheld the magnificent “Rock of Ages” and “Bottomless Pit” before making our way back to surface.
Sunday morning led us to Sitting Bull Falls, where we scurried barefoot over rocks, boulders, and into cold springs of flowing water. We swam in the deep pool, that collected at the base of the waterfall. Later, scrambling still barefoot, we explored more cracks, holes, crags, and overhangs further from the waterfall.
